It's been four years since the esteemed ex-Mars Volta drummer began playing in QotSA. Now we've been gifted with the multifarious Villains, and at long last we get to hear what he sounds like on a full-length record with the group. What's immediately clear is that drummer and band push each other to new heights of artistic expression.

He should get DW to hook him up with a kit, because QotSA's drumsound needs force. MrSaladFork • 10 yr. ago Agreed. Jon Theodore has a pretty dynamic drumming style, or at least with TMV. One Day as a Lion has a little different style on it. In a normal situation like this in the last few years it would be Josh Freese filling in.

Grohl lends his skills to five songs out of the ten, while Castillo is on four and the band's new touring drummer, Jon Theodore (of Mars Volta fame), plays on the title track. Homme's all-star cast doesn't stop there, with big talents such as Trent Reznor, Alex Turner, Jake Shears, and Elton John (of all people!) adding their names to the Clockwork credits.

The incredible Jon Theodore is their current drummer and he also played with The Mars Volta, another challenging position for a drummer to hold. Are you a fan of Jon's and/or have you ever seen Jon perfrom live? He is another disciple of John Bonham for sure! Here he is with QOTSA doing a drum solo out of "Songs for the Dead" at Rock in Rio.

I'd love to meet a new QOTSA drummer. And, Jon is so good! He is capable of playing super technical and complex parts like in TMV and Golden, and He doesn't exactly showcase his ability too much in QOTSA. TMV is one of my favorite bands of all time and I was super hyped when John Theodore joined QOTSA, but his departure actually wouldn't.

Part of the appeal of QOTSA's music is their ability to hold a tight grip on the rhythm of their stomping guitar anthems, and the band's playing matches up powerfully with Theodore's work.
